ANESTHETICS

A Few Words About Anesthetics.

The IntraFlow™ Anesthesia Delivery System works with standard 1.8ml dental anesthetic cartridges.

CAUTION: The dentist is responsible for monitoring the levels of anesthetic administered and it is recommended that all cautions and instructions of the anesthetic manufacturer be followed.

Site Preparation
Apply topical anesthetic to the site and follow manufacturer’s directions. Usually this means applying it to the dried gingiva and allowing approximately 30-60 seconds for the topical to take effect.
In certain cases, depending on the patient and the procedure, an infiltration injection may be useful to anesthetize the mucosa (eg, implant placement).

Typical Dosages
To numb one or two teeth, ½ to ¾ of one cartridge (1.2cc) is usually sufficient for 20 to 40 minutes of pulpal anesthesia.
For multiple teeth, one full cartridge (1.5 cc to 1.8 c) usually provides 40 to 60 minutes of anesthesia.
Larger teeth with multiple roots may require additional dosage.

Onset, Extent and Duration
Onset is very rapid – usually within one minute.
Procedures can start immediately because intraosseous anesthetic is metabolized quickly.
Duration of a single injection varies depending on patient’s response to anesthetic, type of anesthetic chosen, operator technique and volume infused. Subsequent injection(s) may be given if extended duration is required.

Minimizing Side Effects
Vasoconstrictors (epinephrine, neo-corbeferin, levonordiphrine) may cause transient tachycardia. If epinephrine is used, a 1:200,000 concentration may be more desirable.
Anesthetics without vasoconstrictors such as mepivicvaine 3% are well suited for most 30-40 minute procedures.
As always, your specific selection of anesthetic and dosages should be based upon your professional judgement and the specific conditions of your patients.
